Dear Friends and Neighbors:

Our great state and our communities face serious challenges. Our budget is in crisis, threatening the quality of life we've enjoyed for decades. We need effective, practical solutions — free from rigid ideologies — to solve problems and ensure that our future and the future of our children remain bright.

Together we can keep our families safe and healthy, our economic future secure, our air and water clean, our schools striving for excellence if we can simply talk to one another across partisan lines with respect.

I'm running for the 19th District Senate seat, for Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles Counties in order to accomplish these goals, but I need your help. Whether you are Republican, Democrat, Independent or of any other political stripe, you know that I've worked extremely hard as a legislator to restore excellence in our schools, protect our environment, fight for consumers, stand up for the victims of domestic violence and fight for sensible health care reform. I've tried to do so with integrity and respect for other points of view.

That's one reason why I'm supported by our local firefighters, nurses, teachers, police officers, environmental organizations, business leaders -- and dozens of local elected leaders, including Democrats and Republicans.

I'd be honored to have your support too.

I look forward to working with each of you to make California as great as it can be.

On November 3, 1998 the citizens of the 35th Assembly District elected Hannah-Beth Jackson, an attorney and former prosecutor, to represent them in Sacramento. The district, encompassing portions of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, honored Hannah-Beth's dedicated service in the Legislature by returning her to office two more times — the maximum she could serve in the Assembly under California's term-limit laws.

During her six years in the Assembly, Hannah-Beth was a determined and forceful legislator. She advocated tirelessly for

  • improving public education
  • increasing public safety
  • improving access to health care
  • protecting the environment and
  • protecting the rights of consumers

and authored more than 60 significant bills that were signed into law by governors both Republican and Democratic. In addition to the above issues, her bills focused on financial privacy, crime victims, reproductive rights, domestic violence and child care.

During her years in the Legislature Hannah-Beth held a number of critical committee assignments and chairmanships. She served as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources; Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Coastal Protection; Chair of the bipartisan Legislative Women's Caucus; and Chair of the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee. She sat as a member of a number of standing committees, including the Budget Committee, the Judiciary Committee and the Higher Education Committee.

Upon completing her third term in the Assembly, she co-founded the non-profit organization, Speak Out, California!

Hannah-Beth is married to Superior Court Judge George Eskin and has lived in the district for over 30 years. She has a daughter, two stepchildren and four grandchildren.
